Beaver facts
- Beavers are the second-biggest rodents in the world — only the capybara of South America is larger.
- A beaver's front teeth never stop growing. Gnawing wood all day keeps them filed down to the right length.
- Beavers have a clear third eyelid, a bit like built-in swimming goggles, so they can see with their eyes open underwater.
- They can hold their breath for up to 15 minutes, and their flat tail works as a rudder — and as an alarm, slapped hard on the water to warn the family.
- Baby beavers are called kits, and they can swim within about 24 hours of being born.
- Beavers are vegetarians. They eat bark, twigs, water plants and leaves — never fish.
